In 1897 in Pyungyang, Soongsil started out in the guest room of Dr. W.
M. Baird, a missionary from the Northern Presbyterian Church of America.
It was Dr. Baird's dream to begin a new chapter in Christian education in
Korea. This 'sarangbang' (guest room) school started its class with 13 students ; it grew rapidly and became 'Soongsil Hakdang' a reputable institution of secondary education 1n 1900. Soongsil Hakdang started to offer college education 1905. Dr. W. M.
