During the colonialization of Korea, which is called the Dark Age of Korean culture, Soongsil led in the dawn of the age of enlightenment, introducing the western music, literature, art, and sports. Iktae Ahn, Taejoon Park, Jemyung Hyun, and Dongjin Kim were among those who became familiar with the western music at Soongsil and went on to become father of the western music in Korea. Hyunseung Kim and Chokyu Kim, who studied literature at Soongsil, became founders of the tradition of modern poetry in Korea. Soongsil Soccer Team, which was the main force on Pyongyang Soccer Team, played Seoul Soccer Team, in the Kyungpyung Tournament. The tournament was an exciting national event, causing a soccer fever among the North and South Korean spectators alike.
