The Department of Textile Engineeing at Soongsil was established in 1968 and has produced many qualified professionals in the field who have greatly contributed to the development of the nation's textile industry.

Textile industry , due to its special nature, is closely interwined with many other industries and produces highly profitable products. The government, consequently, has designated the industry as the top national strategic industry and has agressively promoted it. The department, in support of the government's policy, strives to produce quality professionals for the industry who can develp quality textiles. The department's curriulum has been recently revised to meet its goal, and students' academic achievements must meet stricter standards. The University and the Board of Directors are also dedicated to expanding the department program by creating a division which includes several different areas of textile engineering.

Located in Seoul, the center of the Pacific Rim, Soongsil's Department of Textile Engineering will be the leader of the field in the 21st century.

Architecture is a field which studies the components of a desirable physical shape and living space for humans. Searching for artistic qualities and practical considerations at the same time, architecture combines art and technology. Modern architecture emphasizes comprehensive training in both artistic and technical areas.

This department offers a diversified program in which students learn how to find the right balance between the ideal and the real, theory and practice, part and whole, and individual and society. Students also learn to understand the multifaceted, changing nature of the architect's role in society and to put it into historical perspective.

In order to achieve the aforementioned goals, this department emphasizes objectivity, diligence, and openness, constantly evaluating and improving its policies and functions.

The Department of Architectural Engineering at Soongsil University was established in 1981 and admited its first students in 1982. As of March, 1995, the department produced 307 graduates through 12 graduations. Currently, there are 212 students enrolled in the department: 184 undergraduate students and 28 (including 14 in the Graduate School of Industry) students in Master's degree program. The department has 5 professors and 17 instructors.

The department, since its inception, has offered a balanced curriculum of design and actual building technology, combining the best aspects of domestic and foreign curricula. The current curriculum , a product of constant revision and modification, is truly creative and unique.

This division is dedicated to fostering engineers who will be pioneers and leaders in the 21st century, when energy, information, and the environment will play the central roles in society.

To achieve this goal, this division offers an exciting environment for students not only to acquire specialized knowledge but also to build character so that they will possess wisdom to actively work, study, and live together with others in the global village.

Creation of brand new fields of study and further specialization of existing fields of study are common phenomena in engineering. The current trend in engineering is toward faster and faster development of theories and technology, thus narrowing the interval between conception of a theory and its application. In order to keep up with the fast-paced development in mechanical engineering and to meet the expectations of the industries, this department is dedicated to:

1. fostering qualified engineers with a bachelor's degree who will meet the demands of society; 2. fostering professionals with technology and research backgrounds by promoting graduate programs; 3. promoting basic research, applied research, and research and development by encouraging more faculty research activities; 4. promoting social service through cooperation between academia and industries; 5. promoting a more people-oriented approach to education, which values human mind and emotion.
