The Department of Engligh Language and Literatue
offers a curriculum which includes both British and American literature
from classical to modern periods, represented by various forms of literature
such as poetry, novel, drama, short story, essay, etc. Traing in reading,
analyzing, and criticizing representative pieces of literature enables
students to understand and judge literature intelligently and creatively.
Such training also helps develop the ability to think and to respond to
ideas, keeping up with the university's long tradition of an enriched
liberal arts education.
The curriculum also includes a study of the Engligh language - its structure,
usage, etc. Through the understanding of English literature and language,
students can better understand the British and American people and culture,
which will help to promote good relationships in this globalized world.
The department aims to foster young people who will contribute to the
international community with their practical knowledge of different
cultures and languages.

The Department of French Language and Literature
offers a curriculum which provides both depth and variety. Through studying
language and literature, which make up the center of humanities, the department
promotes research into the fundamental human mind. At the same time, the
curriculum offers training in French language, thus fostering qualified
men and women who will contribute to society with their special knowledge.

The Department of German Language and Literature
offers training in academic theories about German literature and linguistics,
thus pursuing pure knowledge within the ivory tower. At the same time,
it also offers traing in practical application of the knowledge to real
life situations, thus producing well-qualified graduates who will contribute
to the international understanding of different cultures and peoples.
Literature is the representation of human life, and studying German literature
enables students to gain insights into the philosophy, ideology, and perception
of German people and their lives and to develop openmindedness and wisdom
to become leaders in modern society.

The educational goal of the Department of Korean
Language and Literature is to foster men and women with practical knowledge
and good character, who will become useful members of the international
community by making the best use of their unique and creative qualities
as Koreans.

| DEPARTMENT OF
HISTORY |
1. Korean History
This part of the curriculum is geared towards students who wish to concentrate
on Korean history. The curriculum deals with the fundamentals of knowledge
needed for studying Korean history and insightful analysis of history and
present-day society. Students read various materials on each period of history
and carefully analyze them to find out the characteristics and problems
of each period. Such training enables students to interpret history intelligently
and to put them in broad perspective.
2. Asian History
This curriculum covers the history of many parts of Asia, but with particular
emphasis on those of China and Japan. This study enables students to understand
the developmental course of Asian traditions and Korea's place in the
big picture. By studying Asian history in relation to Western history,
students can better understand the place that Asia occupies in the history
of the whole world.
3. Western History
This curriculum offers in-depth study of Western history, focusing on
its characteristics and significance in relation to Asian and Korean history.
Western history is divided into different periods and areas, and each
period and area is examined separately. By analyzing many of the main
issues in Western history, students learn to understand the developmental
process of Western civilization. Ability to reinterpret history or to
put it into new perspective is cultivated through this training.

CHINESE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE |
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature offers a
curriculum ranging from a basic course to one which is highly advanced and
specialized in the Chinese language and literature. This academic training
prepares students to work with people in Chinese-speaking countries, which
are expected to emerge as the most influential regions in the 21st century.
Historically, Korea and China have been closely tied to each other due to
their geographical locations, and the goal of our department is to nurture
talented people who will become important participants in the special relationship.
To this end, the department provides a curriculum that promotes understanging
of various aspects of Chinese culture with special emphasis on its language
and literature.

PHILOSOPHY |
Philosophy is a study that seeks to discover the nature of
truth and konwledge and to find out what is of basic value and importance
in life. This field represents a long tradition of liberal arts education
at Soongsil. To make the study meaingful in the current, ever-changing society,
this department constantly exchanges information with other disciplines
and emphsizes foreign language training. The department also work closely
with other universities to exchange ideas and update its resources. The
curriculum provides in-depth, specialized courses in philosophy as well
as a broad range of general courses to enrich young minds. |
